Aspects of the Syntactic Problems of Esan Learners of English

This paper examines noun and verb phrase structures in both the English and Esan languages. It compares and contrasts the two languages to determine, especially areas of difficulties which hamper the learning of English by the Esan bilingual.

It examines structural forms of MHQ elements of the noun and verb phrases in English and Esan, and their relatedness to meaning with a focus on the positions of the auxiliary and main verbs in the expression of Time, Aspect and Mode. The study aims at awakening teachers of English to the possible areas of grammatical error generation which may arise from the Esan speaker’s mother tongue interference into his use of English.
